A really "cool" ship! “JOIDES” stands for Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling. The name reflects the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program's (IODP) commitment to the science of exploring what lies beneath the ocean floor... “Resolution” honors an earlier ship, the HMS Resolution, commanded more than 200 years ago by Capt. James Cook, who explored the Pacific and Antarctic regions. Around the ship, in the lab and during on-shore operations, crew and staff refer to the JOIDES Resolution affectionately as The JR.

Data from the JR's ocean drilling offers a scientific means of understanding climate and environmental change throughout a significant part of our planet’s history—often termed Earth's paleoclimate. The JR’s core samples are the “smoking gun” in evaluating many historical events related to paleoclimate, changes in the solid earth and more -- like the extinction of the dinosaurs.

From 2006-2008, The JR was completely retrofitted with exciting new scientific drillling equipment, new structural improvements and significant upgrades. It is almost a whole new ship!

Work aboard the research vessel never ceases; operations continue 24 hours a day. JOIDES Resolution’s complement can consist of 50 scientists and technicians and 65 crew members. The crew consists of marine professionals and ocean drilling specialists, among others. The JR’s science party is specific to each mission, with skills and science disciplines chosen especially to best achieve the mission’s goals.

in one of her most significant installations to date, the Los Angeles-based artist utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to wed her projections to the dramatic architecture of the gallery, dematerializing the space and creating an eerie environment.

The title, Daisy Bell, refers to a particular moment in the history of science and culture: in 1962, Bell Labs used the IBM 704 to synthesize the popular 19th-century English song of the same name. The song was also used in the climactic scene of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey in which the supercomputer HAL 9000 begins to sing Daisy, Daisy as his consciousness is degraded.

Steinkamp's Daisy Bell series is comprised of a variety of poisonous flowers that appear to cascade down the gallery walls. Much as Bell Lab's Daisy Bell consisted of a human application reinterpreting nature, Steinkamp reprises the idea, and defines this new series of artwork by its relationship to human innovations.
